Culminating performance tasks help a student connect to the real world by enhancing the student's communication and collaborative skills. These tasks also broaden the audience for the student, which obviously makes it more real world. By connecting classwork to the business world or some other aspect of the real world, a student is able to see the relevance of his/her learning. The student is also able to apply his/her knowledge to an authentic situation, which often leads to a deeper understanding and a more conceptual thought-process that can be applied to other situations/learning.

A culminating performance task can actually be used as a vehicle for discovery of a concept, or deeper understanding of a concept. By using the “what, why, how” method of completing a task, students are able to use high level thinking skills such as analyze, evaluate, and investigate to make their own connections and show their understandings. These types of tasks create opportunities for us as teams of teachers to integrate our curriculum and implement Iowa Core.

Project based assessments that use collaboration, communication, team building and prioritizing often work well if they can be viewed or serve a purpose for the school or better still the community.

Students’ interests play a role. Discussion is encouraged allowing for debate, contemplation, and consideration.
