Should a culminating performance task be something that is graded or used formatively? Explain your thinking.

We felt it should be a little of both - graded and formative. When a culminating performance task is completed, we felt it should be "evaluated" and then the student should have the opportunity to improve it before the final grade it given. If true formative assessment is used throughout the culminating performance task process, the grade in the end should take care of itself (for most students).

Response to Video #7: Question #1 - Real world connections explored by both the teacher and the students broadens the overall relevance for each and every student b/c each can share their individual perspectives and achieve a personally connected relevance.
Question #2 - The derivative of a grade is still essential at this point and time so for that reason I would say it needs to be both. A rubric developed to shape the essential ideas a teacher is looking for could be the link to grading a performance task. We are still pretty attached to grades at this time.

It could depend on the purpose of the culminating task. It also depends on whether you want the students to know it or to show they know it. What about grades? We would like it to be formative, but the world we live in requires us to grade. It would be a huge change for us and it would also be a big change for parents and students.

Learning builds upon past experiences to create new thought and meaning. Therefore there is rarely any learning that fits neatly into a category. Having said that however, the bottom line is that we live in a pragmatic world that is focused on extrinsic rewards. It would take a revolution or many baby steps to be able to use the word culminate and non-graded in the same education with most individuals involved in the educational system.

Can be used for both...This is determined by what a teacher wants to do. Should this be standards based?
