What were some things you noticed when highlighting the topics/facts and concepts within the Iowa Core?

We noticed that there are many opportunities for integration of different subjects.

Because the Iowa Core is the over arching umbrella it allows for flexibility and creativity when utilizing concept-based instruction giving ample opportunities for curricular integration.

Topics are front loading-need background knowledge to be able to understand concepts and solve conceptual questions. Conceptual learning allows for discussion and creativity while integrating the curriculum.

Using the Iowa Core would be a great way to start building/talking about concept-based units.

The Iowa Core provides flexibility. This ties in well with concept based learning.

Response to Video #4: Question #1 - The Iowa Core is a nice framework to begin our discussions. There is lots of flexibility within the Iowa Core so teachers still have some freedom to develop concept based units.
Question #2 - Honestly, we have done very little development of concepts, mapping, etc. at the elementary level b/c PD has been very CGI heavily based. High School on the other hand has explored in this direction. We will need to do far more of this next year with the elementary teachers.

At an elementary level, the teachings are pretty factual. At the high school level, the concepts are there, but the Iowa Core is not a conceptual document. The Iowa Core Document is very broad. We want to know why there are facts in the Iowa Core.

The facts and concepts cross over constantly during a unit. The facts are the vehicle to drive the concepts. If all we teach is the vehicle though the students don't always grasp the big picture concepts of the facts on their own. It is important to be explicit in what we want kids to know,

We noticed that it is difficult to tell the difference between topics and cioncepts in some cases.
