What are some things that your district/school has in place that you could build upon in order to collaborate to build conceptual-based units?

We thought our professional development with our Enacted Curriculum would be a good time to start working on conceptual-based units. We also thought conceptual-based units would be a good focus for our PLC's.

We feel utilizing PD time to work on adding 1-2 concept-based units before each quarter to plan the themes, concepts, etc...for the next quarter would be very beneficial. We could also use PLC time to continue conversations with colleagues, and look at data.

We have started our mapping process this year. We have curriculum but need to review it to see where the Iowa Core fits in (this is where our mapping comes in). Professional development sessions over the past several years has focused on inquiry and conceptual learning. We have Learning Teams in place and we could utilize some of this time for learning more about conceptual learning and CEI. Teachers would like more time to be able to collaborate and chat with other teachers to brainstorm and get ideas about conceptual learning.

Our middle school has team time that includes some core teachers which would be a great time for collaboration. Middle and high school teachers have been involved in creating May term courses which would be good places to start. K-12 teachers are currently working on creating student-centered classroom units which could generate conversation on concept-based units.

Our HS is in its third year of implementing Authentic Intellectual Work (AIW) and the MS is in its first year. This structure will work well as we focus on concept based learning.

The elementary is in it's second year of teaching Everyday Math. this program focuses on conceptual learning. Grades 7-12 have had training in PBL. This would be a good area to expand upon. We are also focusing on CEI. In particular we have noted that you can't Teach for Understanding if you are teaching only facts. Collaboration and planning are critical in developing and implementing effective Concept Based units. MNW has well-established collaborative teams. The CEI really connect to the ideas and learning happening in concept based learning. Themes from the Iowa Core lend themselves as concepts that could be implemented in concept based units. For instance, 21st century skills could be a theme that would be connected into multiple subject areas by through several concepts.

In the middle school, we already have teacher team divided by grade level and we do have some time built in at the middle school and high school to build in collaborative units. We have units and projects that could be developed into concept-based units and classroom teachers who are using concept-based learning.

We are collaborating with BVU, and two other schools in a program called P3 which is going to aid us in creating CEI units at the classroom level where the rubber meets the road. This is an extension of the CEI planning that we are currently doing once a month during PD time.

*Built in common planning time between the levels, so the time is there for teachers to collaborate. *Math Investigations helps students generate different ways to come up with solving or doing things. *In the Book Room used for small group reading, certain leveled book boxes are organized according to concepts, such as "change." This could be built upon by considering extending this throughout more boxes.
