What are some actions that you can take in your classroom/school/district to begin to push student thinking toward higher levels and increasing sophistication?

Some actions we have taken in our district to push students toward higher levels of thinking and increasing sophistication are to create more student-centered experiences in our classrooms and to create projects that allow kids to explore and create. We discussed how little lecturing we do and how we are really trying to create opportunities for our students to take control of their own learning. We want our students to ask the "so what?" and "why?" questions and then we want them to answer the questions for themselves (with our guidance).

We need to begin to ask more open ended, higher order thinking questions.
Our district PD for this year is student-centered classrooms. Teachers are working on changing lessons to help students become more involved in their learning through inquiry, and higher order thinking skills.

We have focused our professional development on Higher Order Thinking Skills with an emphasis on Student-Centered Classrooms. We are continually looking at ways to actively engage students in their own learning and we are promoting students taking ownership in their educational journey.

We are in our third year of working with Authentical Intellectual Work (AIW). One of the focuses of AIW is to look at student to make sure they are at a high level.

Response to Video #5: Question #1 - We have not underlined the generalizations as an elementary staff within Iowa Core. Again the high school teachers have touched on this but not deeply enough.
Question #2 - High school teachers have had some engaging discussion about deepening the higher order thinking with high school students and they have taught concept based units and then shared them with each other during PD so each teacher had a chance to witness how their colleagues were deepening the thought process for students. Elementary teachers still need to work in this direction b/c they have not yet had these discussions.

There are three key questions – we ask why, how and so what. We have to go through the levels of generalizations and lead the students to the next level in the scaffolding process. In the school district, we have to do that district-wide so that we can move to a deeper understanding and move higher on the Bloom’s Taxonomy scale.

Learning needs to be more project based and student centered. With 1-1 computers students can find the facts easily. Now the question is what do we want them to create with the facts, or better yet what do they, the students want to create with the facts that is useful beyond the classroom and in a perfect unit useful in the community

How the question is asked is important-so is the directed “action.” The activities should be problem-based, authentic, and flexible.
